IDRE 3-DAYS 2004, day 3, hunting start, Women 65, 3640 m.
Solveig Dillman, Hammarby IF, started out in a lead of 11 minutes ahead of Britt Ericson, Hammarby IF. To the first control, she choose a safe and fast route. She takes a smooth right curve and can thereby easily use the ridge and then the three hills. On the edge of the third hill is a stone which gives her an ideal mark for getting the first post.
Britt Ericson chose a more straight forward way -- but the marshes to navigate after are placed as marshes so often are here in the mountains, that is, in the mountain heath and thus hard to grasp and notice in competition pace. This makes her get too much to the right of the post, and she loses almost four minutes. Marita Karlsson, on the other hand, manages to navigate right and gets the control.
The second control is situated really tricky in the terrain, but didn't cause the two top ladies any problems. Marita made a mistake which had her start from the creek again, however.
The way towards the third post means fast-paced terrain, but ends about 100 meters from the control, where instead dense primeval forest is hiding the control. To control one's pace is the major task here. SD has some problems, but loses only 37 seconds to BE, who makes no mistakes and gets the control right away. MK makes the same turn as SD and ends up too high in the slope.
The terrain towards post 4 and 5 is very fast-paced mountain heath, and I thought that some of the competitors would get off the straight line because of the pace. These 65-ladies are however good at running on the compass, and made no mistakes.
When I so had managed to make the runners run perhaps a little bit fast, I changed character of the course by heading them into a rough and detailed slope. This requires a much more slow pace than before, so that the runner will be able to see the details. Mistakes cost _time_ here. But all the D65:s seem to have gotten warning lights blinking in their heads, because they seem to have switched on a most impressing orienteering talent. I suspect they've used a most strict compass course as a foundation, and then added a reading of the more distinct terrain objects.
After control 7, the terrain goes back to mountain heath, which makes the 8th post a little bit tricky since the runners may think they can see more far and better than actually possible. You need to run really into the little marsh in the tiny depression behind the ridge to be able to see the control, so this is the place where the mistakes were made on the course. A reaction coming from the relaxing thoughts of having left what seemed to be the most difficult parts behind.
